Flowers for Seniors

The Niagara on the Lake Horticultural Society hands out approximately 300 flower arrangements on an annual basis. Recipients are three local nursing homes and the Niagara on the Lake Hospital.

Tues. Jan. 24th - Growing and Working with Willow
By Lene Rasmussen. Learn how to work with living willow rods, twisting or weaving them into potted trees that can be transplanted to your garden later this year.

Tues. Feb. 28th - Framework Elements of Great Garden Design
By Evelyn Wolf
- Perennial Garden Consultant. Showcase of ideas that go beyond the ordinary, and how to modify and manipulate the various non-plant elements in your garden to suit the space and budget. Learn unique ideas to expand the imagination.

Tues. March 27th - Edible Landscaping
By Marjorie Mason
of Mason House Gardens radio host and author. Make your garden a feast for the plate, as well as the eyes.

Tues. April 46th - Under Utilized Woody Trees and Shrubs
By Darrell D. Bley Curator of Woody Plants and Instructor at the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture will show us what can add interest in spring and early summer.

Tues. May 22nd - Recycled Gardens
By Frank Kershaw, award-winning horticulturalist. Informative presentation will highlight numerous ways that throw away objects, can be given new life in the garden as both functional and decorative pieces. You will certainly think twice about what is being put out to the garbage or what you might purchase at a yard sale.

No meetings June, July or August.

Tues. Sept. 25th - Building Canada's Newest Botanic Garden
The Heimbeckers will be sharing with us the future unveiling of Canada's Newest Horticultural Playground in 2012…Whistling Gardens. Classical gardens, rock/alpine, Asian, perennial, a conifer collection amongst the largest in the world, formal and informal gardens with water features including Canada's only all stone amphitheatre.

Tues. Oct. 23rd - Water Features for the Garden
By Rowena Burns, author, International speaker and owner of Burns Water Gardens. The smallest garden can accommodate a water feature. The possibilities are endless: from ceramic pots to disappearing fountains, there is a way to include water in every garden. There will be tips and techniques for construction of many unusual and effective water features. Introduce the splash of water and the charm of aquatic plants into that special garden corner.

Tues. Nov. 27th - Pot Luck/Annual General Meeting
Time: 6:00 pm
AND 101 Great Hardy Plants for Niagara Gardens: A Wish List for 2013

By Tony Post, Valleybrook Gardens. Bring your notepad and paper to mark down your favourites of 101 perennials, shrubs and trees that should be grown more commonly. Tony will discuss common selections, brand new introductions and rare plants for the collector.

We distribute flowers to seniors in local nursing homes and the Niagara-on-the-Lake hospital.

Submit a picture you have taken in Niagara-on-the-Lake 2012 representing a spring flower or flowers. What a better way to get our CONTEST off to a bright and cheerful start. Details and contest info to follow on our website and local newspapers.
